At Michael Ellis Architects, we believe great architecture is borne of respectful practice. Our designs balance the physical, emotional and financial wellbeing of our clients, and we give honest and informed advice and instruction on the journey to realising striking built results.
With a strong body of work in residential, multi-residential and hospitality projects, we have established a reputation for compelling yet pragmatic architecture. This is best evidenced through the careful consideration we give to project budgets and commercial efficiencies.
We are fascinated with artisanship, and appreciate the beauty that can be achieved when natural materials meet skilled hands.
With our studio in Elwood, we have extensive experience in Melbourne’s south east, but our work extends across metropolitan Melbourne, regional Victoria, Perth and Sydney.

Michael
After cutting his professional teeth at esteemed Melbourne architecture firms, Fender Katsalidis and Wood Marsh, MEA Director Michael Ellis went out on his own in 2001, keen to explore an intensely personal approach to residential design.
Demonstrating a holistic approach to architecture, Ellis has committed to understanding the practicalities of construction. He spent seven years teaching Construction Technology at the University of Melbourne, and has been an ongoing guest critic for RMIT TAFE’s Building Design and Drafting course. Ellis remains a member of the latter’s program course advisory panel.
Michael’s background includes international experience in New York and London. His firm has won State and National awards for both architecture and interiors, which means clients benefit from an all-in-one design service.
His work has also featured on television shows including Grand Designs Australia and Build Me a Home, and more importantly, he has imparted his knowledge and skills through pro-bono work for local charities.
Ellis is a Fellow of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects (FRAIA).
